Characteristics are a feature or quality belonging typically to a person, place or thing and serving to identify it. So when speaking about student characteristics we can say each student has a different quality belonging to them and they serve to identify it through behavior and academics. There are a variety of students so this would explain the variety of characteristics among students in a school.
There are some desirable characteristics a student can possess to make them a success student.
Accept Responsibility
Are self-motivated
Master self-management
Are independent
Have self-awareness
Believe in life-long learning
Have high EQ’s (emotional intelligence)
Believe in yourself
When a student shows a majority of these characteristics, they have what it takes to be a successful student and perform well academically. These characteristics can carry over into their lives outside of the classroom and they can use them to set a good example for the people around them.
There are also characteristics of a student that we can look for to see if they are unsuccessful or at risk of failing
A history of academics failure
Emotional and behavior problems
Lack of psychological attachment to school
Increasing disinvolvement with school.
There are many characteristics of a student, but I focused on the ones that may have an effect on student performance. The desirable characteristics can increase academic performance and the unsuccessful characteristics could put the student at risk for failing. Teachers should support all of these characteristics because they are what make up their students along with their different learning styles, that also need to be supported. Some of the students will have characteristics made up from both lists and they will need guidance to keep increasing the positives and support to detach from the negatives.
